Sale 1076, Lot 2217, Western AustraliaWESTERN AUSTRALIA, 1879, 2p Lilac, Error of Color (31a; SG 55b). Large part original gum, uncharacteristically well-centered, attractive color

VERY FINE. AN EXTRAORDINARILY RARE ERROR OF COLOR THAT IS SELDOM OFFERED IN SUCH PREMIUM ORIGINAL-GUM CONDITION.

A desirable error and one of the rarest errors of the Australian States that is often missing in even the most advanced British Commonwealth collections, not to mention it being a key stamp stamp for the topical bird collector.

Nearly all unused examples are without gum, having come from a half sheet of 60 that was purchased by Stanley Gibbons in 1879. There were also a tiny number with original gum that emanated from a different source (possibly the rest of the sheet), where all of the used examples also came from.
