Sale 1075, Lot 1293, Worldwide Stamps: Ceylon thru TurkeyNEW BRUNSWICK, 1860, 5c Connell (5; SG 13). Large part original gum, rich color, some blunt or irregular perfs as is almost always the case on this stamp

A FINE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 5-CENT CONNELL STAMP. PERHAPS 50-60 EXIST.

Connell, a provincial postmaster, had his own portrait engraved on the 5c stamp instead of Queen Victoria. Once this was discovered the entire printing of the Connell stamp was seized and destroyed. Some escaped destruction and today are very rare and much sought-after stamps.

The 5c Connell stamp is usually found with poor centering. The perforations are nearly always damaged from scissor-separation or are roughly pulled apart, the result of poor perforating. They also usually have creases, thins, and/or lack gum. The example offered here, being essentially sound and with large part original gum, is in far better condition than most of the other existing examples.
