HAWAII, 1866, 5c Blue (32). Deep rich color, used with United States 10c Yellow Green, F. Grill (96), clear grill, tied by circle of wedges cancel and "San Francisco Cal. Dec. 10" (1868) circular datestamp on cover to Mrs. Frederick Hobbs in Bangor Me., double-circle receiving datestampVERY FINE. AN UNUSUAL MIXED FRANKING, BUT SENT FROM HAWAII TO THE UNITED STATES OUTSIDE OF THE MAILS.
The absence of a Hawaiian postmark suggests this was carried privately to San Francisco where it entered the mails. The cover was franked to pay the contract rate by Hawaiian Steam Service.
