5c Brick Red (27). Brilliant color, choice centering, bold strike of New York Ocean Mail circular datestamp with integral grid and December date, a very desirable strike with the complete grid showing EXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL EXAMPLE OF THE 1858 5-CENT BRICK RED WITH THE NEW YORK OCEAN MAIL DATESTAMP.
This distinctive cancel is normally seen on 10c stamps used to pay the transcontinental rate. Its use on a 5c stamp, especially on the desirable Brick Red shade, is remarkable.
