4c Trans-Mississippi (287). Cancelled by intricately carved Admiral Dewey fancy cancel of East Clarendon Vt., including "Dewey" spelled out at bottom of cancel, Extremely Fine strike of this exceedingly rare cancel -- Admiral Dewey was born in Montpelier Vt., he served in the Civil War and also distinguished himself in the Spanish-American War where on April 30, 1898, over the course of six hours, he sunk or captured the entire Spanish Pacific fleet in Manila Bay -- our Sale 616 (lots 772 and 776) included a strike on cover with 2c 1898 and another 4c Trans-Mississippi off cover, our recent World's Fair collection had a 4c off-cover but struck lower on the stamp without "Dewey"
