1c, 5c Panama-Pacific (397, 399). 1c vertical strip of seven, used with single 5c, wide margins, natural s.e. at right, tied by First Day "Plainfield N.J. Jan 1. (1913) 6:30 AM" duplex datestamp and oval grid cancel, additional First Day "Plainfield N.J. Jan. 1, 1913" machine cancel tying the strip on cover to a young man within Plainfield, marked "Special Delivery", purple "Fee Claimed by Office of First Address" Special Delivery handstamp, crayon time marking, bottom 1c stamp a paste-up, small toned spot on second to bottom 1c not mentioned on accompanying certificateVERY FINE. THIS OUTSTANDING MIXED DENOMINATION COVER IS ONLY THE SECOND RECORDED FIRST DAY USE FOR THE 5-CENT PANAMA-PACIFIC ISSUE. A NEW DISCOVERY OFFERED TO THE MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME.
Prior to the discovery of this cover, the 5c single on cover from the Dr. Alfred S. Martin collection was the only recorded First Day of Issue use (Siegel Sale 894, lot 353). With the additional large multiple of the 1c, this is one of the most striking and important 20th Century First Day covers extant.
