24c Purple (153). Mint N.H. vertical pair with top part arrow selvage, natural s.e. at right, intense dark color on crisp paper, both stamps attractive margins and well-centered for this difficult issueVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE MINT NEVER-HINGED POSITION PIECE OF THE 1870 24-CENT NATIONAL BANK NOTE COMPANY ISSUE FROM THE FAMOUS PLATE NUMBER BLOCK THAT WAS BROKEN.
This pair represents the right half of the Mint N.H. plate number block of four that was part of the Walter C. Klein collection and was last sold in our 1998 Rarities sale. Sadly, after the Rarities sale it was broken into two singles and this pair. The bottom left stamp was offered in our Silver Lake sale (Sale 866, lot 84) and the top left plate number single was offered in our Whitman sale, where it realized $40,000 (Sale 968A, lot 191). Those two singles and this pair are the only Mint N.H. examples of Scott 153 contained in Power Search.
Ex Klein as a block of four. With copy of 1989 P.F. certificate for the block. Scott Retail as two hinged singles does not remotely convey the rarity of this pair
