VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE DIE PROOF SHOWING THE 10-SUBJECT DIE OF THE 3-CENT TYPE II WASHINGTON ISSUE, SCOTT 502.

In the spring of 1918 the Bureau planned to hasten plate production by using a 10-subject transfer roll. It was, however, necessary to first prepare a 10-subject die. Only four plate numbers were made (8866, 8867, 8868 and 8869), none of which was for booklets. Examples from plate numbers 8866 and 8867 are unreported. Plate numbers 8868 and 8869 went to press on April 16, 1919, and examples are considered to be scarce.

Ex Johl and Joyce. Listed but unpriced in Scott.
