5c Carmine, Die Essay on Violet Safety Paper, Type 2 Underprint (115-E4a). 32 x 31mm, deep rich colors, Very Fine, the paper on which the 1869 safety essays were printed is very thin and fragile and was described by Clarence Brazer as "thin wove", it appears similar to India paper and many examples show thin fibers like those found in India paper, as such completely sound examples such as this are vastly in the minority, this and the following lot represent the entire population of 5c essays with this underprint, ex Earl of Crawford and Finkelburg
