"Monrovia (Liberia) 3rd July 1840". Dateline on folded letter to Miss Juliet Buchanan in Poughkeepsie N.Y., written by Gov. Thomas Buchanan, typed transcript of contents incl. "The English men of war as well as the American have nearly all left our coast this season...I am first preparing for the celebration of the 4th...Through the day we are to have a grand parade and review", letter also mentions he is giving this to Dr. Hale, formerly Governor of Cape Palmas, who is traveling to Baltimore, red "Baltimore Md. Aug. 30" circular datestamp and matching "Ship" handstamp, manuscript rate, some splitting along folds and wear, still Very Fine, ex Fosdyke Ray
