30c Orange (71). Faults incl. small piece out at left, used with 3c Rose (65), both tied by "Lancaster Pa., Aug. 22, 1861" double-circle datestamp on cover to Corisco, West Africa, "Paid" straightline with magenta manuscript "33" for British rate to West Africa (Gabon), crossed out with manuscript "28" for credit to Great Britain, "Via England" directive at top left, back with red "N. York Br. Pkt. Paid Aug. 28" circular datestamp, original letter enclosed with beautifully legible and lengthy content including, among other topics, "the war department have just issued a proclamation calling upon those who have arms to hold themselves in readiness to march to the defense of the capital as it is again menaced by the southerners...", and about the recently demonetized 1857 Issue, "if I send it to the Mission Rooms it will have to go unpaid for I cannot enclose old stamps as they are worthless in New York and I have no new ones to send...", some cover wear incl. small holes at upper left from the thick enclosure, Fine appearing and wonderful combination of a scarce destination and Civil War and stamp-related content
