Bottom imprint and plate no. 367 block of ten, original gum, h.r., rich color, each stamp with the eight patent punches in a circle, few trivial perf separations, a few surface flaws endemic to this patented paperVERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND POSSIBLY UNIQUE PLATE BLOCK OF THE 3-CENT RE-ENGRAVED WITH DOUGLAS PATENT PUNCH APPLIED TO THWART CANCELLATION REMOVAL.
The Douglas Patent was designed to prevent the re-use of stamps through printing on two thin layers of paper, which would break apart when removed from a cover. It is reported that some were sold at the Washington D.C. post office.
