2c Vermilion, Double Impression (183a). Showing clear second impression shifted dramatically towards bottom, wide margins, rich color, perfect strike of "13" in target cancel of Philadelphia, small thin spot at left centerEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. THE 2-CENT AMERICAN BANK NOTE STAMP WITH DOUBLE IMPRESSION (SCOTT 183a) IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL DOUBLE IMPRESSIONS -- ONLY TWO ARE KNOWN.
Our list of double impressions is included as an appendix to this catalogue. Most double impressions occur when the first impression is made and found to be inadequate. The paper is then put in the press a second time, when it receives the heavier impression. It is a common misconception that the weaker impression is the second one.
Only two examples of the 1878 2c American Bank Note Co. issue are known with the double impression, illustrated at our website at http://www.siegelauctions.com/dynamic/census/183a/183a.pdf .
