PHILIPPINES, 1874, 62c Rose (50). Tied by light strike of parrilla handstamp on folded letter datelined "Manille 16 Mai 1876" and addressed to Reims, France, endorsed "Via Brindisi" at upper left, red Singapore and "Poss. Ang. V Brind. 2 Juil 76" double-circle datestamp (French railroad cancel applied at Modane for British packet mail thru Brindisi), receiving backstamp, horizontal file fold well away from stampVERY FINE. THIS IS THE EARLIEST EXAMPLE OF MAIL WITH A PHILIPPINES STAMP SENT TO A NON-SPANISH OVERSEAS DESTINATION.
In 1870 the Franco-Prussian War closed the port of Marseilles, the usual route of Philippines mail to Europe. After the war some mail continued to be sent via Brindisi, usually by British P & O packet via Singapore and Suez.
