Sale 1026, Lot 1744, Stampless CoversCapt. William Pickering Correspondence, 1705-08. Eight folded letters, all but one addressed to Capt. William Pickering at either Salem Mass. or Newfoundland, one to "'Harbor of St. Johns", datelined Boston in 1705-08, several with ship captain directives, mixed condition with some edge splitting and toning, still Fine and interesting group, William Pickering (1671-1723) was a prominent Salem ship owner and merchant, as commander of the Province Galley he was active in protecting fishing vessels on the eastern coast from attacks by the French and Indians (Essex Institute historical collections, Volume 56), the Salem Pickering family later included Timothy Pickering, who served as Secretary of State, War and Postmaster General during the 1790's
