Baltimore Md., 5c Black on Bluish (3X3). Position 2, clear margins to just in, tied by blue "PAID" straightline handstamp, matching "Baltimore Md. Oct. 15" (1845) circular datestamp on cover to Miss Eugenia McDonald in Washington D.C., some staining around adhesive from mucilage used to affix stamp, stamp with light crease at right from foldFINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE COVER BEARING THE BALTIMORE, MARYLAND, 5-CENT ON BLUISH PAPER. EXAMPLES WITHOUT PEN CANCELLATION AND TIED BY A HANDSTAMPED MARKING ARE VERY RARE.
The Baltimore provisionals were printed first on bluish and then on white paper (the Scott catalogue reverses the chronological order). Unlisted in Hayes census, which does list six others from this same correspondence used in 1845. Pencil "S.A." (Spencer Anderson) on back.
