24c Gray (37a). Darker shade and sharper impression than that of the stamp offered in the previous lot, choice centering for this difficult issue with well-proportioned margins, grid cancel, fresh and Extremely Fine, in our opinion the 24c 1860 Issue in the Gray shade is considerably scarcer than the main shade listing and deserves a higher catalogue value, the P.S.E. Population Report contains 122 copies of the basic shade of Scott No. 37 certified versus only 28 in all categories for the Gray shade, ex Hinrichs, with 1978 and 2000 P.F. and 2009 P.S.E. certificates (XF 90; SMQ $1,000.00), only two have graded higher to date, SMQ also does not distinguish pricing for one shade or the other
