Sale 1011, Lot 1563, 1867-68 Grilled Issue (Scott 79-100)3c Rose, E. Grill (88). Centered to bottom right, ms "Cumberland Me. Mar. 2" manuscript cancel written from the top to the bottom margins but entirely within the stamp, on "Horace I. Gray Card & Job Printer" corner card cover to the Chairman of the Board of Selectmen of Mattawamkeig Me., tears at top and bottom of cover incl. one into the corner card, appears Fine, the Cumberland press-printed postmarks are discussed by Sterling T. Dow in Maine Postal History and Postmarks and by James W. Milgram in an article in the Chronicle (May 2005, pp. 90-95), while this example lacks the printed postmark, Milgram stated his belief that the ms. cancel on this cover is a precancel which was applied to each stamp in the sheet prior to use, the "d" in "Cumberland" does appear to extend off the stamp, though no trace of it appears on the cover, whether or not this use represents a true precancel it is an interesting cover and an excellent companion to one of the press-printed Cumberland datestamp covers, illustrated in Chronicle No. 206, p. 95, with 2009 P.F. certificate
