24c Carmine Rose & Blue, 1918 Air Post, Grounded Plane Variety (C3 var). Strong Grounded Plane variety, tied by "City Hall Sta. N.Y. Jul. 1, 7-AM 1924" machine cancel on cover to Reno Nev., typed "Via Air Mail", additional New York duplex on back of July 1, receiving backstamp of July 2VERY FINE. AN EXCEEDINGLY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1918 24-CENT AIR POST GROUNDED PLANE VARIETY ON COVER.
According to a 1956 article in Aero Philatelist Annals, one sheet of the Grounded Plane variety was part of the stock of the Nassau Stamp Company. Apparently, the company had difficulty selling the variety and decided to use some on the first transcontinental night flight. Only a few are known used on these covers.
