The 1847 Issue was rarely used to pay the 1848 U.S.-British treaty rate, but we suspect that this intact strip of five represents the typical 1c overpayment of 24c rate, rather than a 5-times 5c domestic rate.

Horizontal pair with large bottom sheet margin and original gum, lightly hinged, other margins are large to clear at lower right, crisp impression, slightly angled vertical crease mostly between stamps just barely touches adjacent framelinesVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN INCALCULABLY RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BOTTOM SHEET MARGIN PAIR OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE. WE ARE UNAWARE OF ANY OTHER UNUSED MULTIPLE OF THIS ISSUE WHICH HAS A SHEET MARGIN. A MAGNIFICENT EXHIBITION PIECE, OFFERED TO THE MARKET FOR THE FIRST TIME IN MANY DECADES.
To underscore the rarity of any original-gum multiple of the 10c 1847, there are only three unused blocks recorded (two with original gum), one of which is contained in the Hirzel collection at the Swiss PTT Museum. The original-gum block in the Zoellner sale, ex Green, Klein and Kapiloff, realized $130,000 in 1998 (Siegel Sale 804, lot 15).
With 2007 P.F. certificate. Scott Catalogue only assigns a $10,000 premium for the pair versus the price of two singles, a premium we feel is far too low given its rarity.
