Colorado Gold Rush Correspondence of Lafayette Twitchell, 1859-61. Approximately 24 letters, some accompanied by covers, each written by Lafayette Twitchell to his wife Angie, in Rosiclare Ill., letters begin from Leavenworth City and continue from Fort Riley and then numerous other locations in Colorado including Cherry Creek, Mountain Camp, Bushy Bar, Golden City, Russells Gulch, California Gulch and Denver City, the covers include two with Jones & Russell's Pike's Peak Express Co. circular datestamp, the express that was absorbed into the Central Overland California & Pikes Peak Express Company, of Pony Express fame (these are in rough condition -- two nicer ones are offered in this sale as individual lots), a great deal of interesting content obviously, mixed condition as would be expected, a fascinating correspondence, Lafayette Twitchell (1829-1908) was from Elizabethtown N.J., he first went west prospecting in the spring of 1849 to California, in 1859 he returned west to Colorado, during the Civil War he was a Union captain in the 136th Illinois Infantry (see lot 579 for the Twitchell Civil War correspondence), see https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Twitchell-513#Ancestors for a family tree and biography
