3c Brownish Carmine, Ty. I (25). Deep rich color and proof-like impression, almost perfectly centered, neat strike of circular datestamp cancelEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 3-CENT ROSE TYPE I -- ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND IN THIS SUPERIOR GRADE.
Ex Wagshal, Merlin and "Clipper City". With 2017 P.F. and 2007 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $2,500.00). Remarkably, the P.S.E. Population Report lists only two XF-Superb 95 and one Superb 98 for the 3c Type I perforated.
3c Rose Red, Ty. I (25). Attractive margins and centering for this tightly spaced issue, fresh color, neat strike of green circular datestamp cancel, Very Fine and scarce with the green cancel, with 2009 P.F. certificate

Gorgeous centering with wide and balanced margins, radiant color in the Claret shade, light strike of grid cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, with 2015 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $800.00 for normal Dull Red), only two grade higher (both 98J), Scott assigns a 2.6-times premium to the Claret shade for this issue
3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26). Vivid color, almost perfect centering, bold perfect strike of railroad route agent's circular datestamp with "From", Extremely Fine Gem, a striking stamp, with 2017 P.F. and 2008 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $325.00)

3c Dull Red, Ty. III (26). Tied by "New-York Sep. 17, 1861" circular datestamp on cover to Philadelphia with red and blue Zouave with Waving Flag and "Washington via Baltimore" Patriotic design, stamp with light vertical wrinkle/crease not mentioned on accompanying certificate, fresh and Very Fine, this design refers to Union Zouaves who raced to Washington, D.C. in the spring of 1861 to protect the capital against Confederate invasion and who were attacked by an anti-Federal mob in Baltimore, ex Karrer, with 2014 P.F. certificate
3c Dull Red, Ty. IV (26A). Jumbo margins and precise centering, deep rich color, neat St. Louis Mo. circular datestamp cancelEXTREMELY FINE GEM USED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 TYPE IV.
The ready availability of 3c 1851-57 stamps gives some collectors the false impression that superb examples, even of a better type, are easily obtainable. Yet with grading approaching its 20th year, only four used examples of Scott 26A have achieved a 95J grade or higher (highest is the Gem 100 offered in our 2019 Rarities sale).
