Clear strike of Benedict Arnold's Leg in elaborate escutcheon fancy cancel of Brattleboro Vt., couple flaws incl. small tear at top, Very Fine strike of this rare cancel, we have not offered another example since our Sale 746 in 1992, before betraying the American cause Arnold was wounded in the foot during the Battle of Quebec, he suffered further injuries at the Battles of Ridgefield and Saratoga which ended his fighting career, a boot monument commemorating his pre-1780 service and his wounding is located at Saratoga National Historical Park, but it does not mention Arnold's name

Cancelled by clear Shoe Fly fancy cancel of Kittrell N.C., stamp with small flaws, Very Fine strike of this scarce fancy cancel, the children's song of the same name was written by Thomas Brigham Bishop (who also wrote "When Johnny Comes Marching Home" and other famous patriotic songs), the words were later changed to "I belong to somebody" from "I belong to Company G", a reference to a black detachment commanded by Bishop
