Jan. 31/61" postmark on buff cover to Monroe Ga., fresh and Fine, a scarce and desirable Independent State use of a U.S. stamp, at 16 days Georgia had the third shortest time of all the Confederate states as an independent state, this cover was mailed four days before Georgia was admitted to the Confederacy

Mar. 1 (1861)" circular datestamp on orange cover to Washington, Pa., original 1861 enclosure reads (in part): "I hear that the good folks in the north are engaged in sending succor to `starving Kansas' which support is not very consistent with the popular delusion here that every one north of Mason & Dixons Line is in a state of absolute starvation, and that as soon as secession & Southern Confederacy are fixed facts, we should have the poor famishing wretches on their knees..." etc., small cover edge nick does not affect stamp, Fine, a scarce Texas Independent State use of a U.S. stamp, we record no others from this town, ex Camina

Apr. 23, 1861" duplex datestamp on 7-Star "Long Flag" Confederate Patriotic cover to New York, stamp with small tear and cover with light soiling, still Very Fine, a rare Confederate use of a U.S. stamp on this C.S.A. patriotic design, which is rare in itself (1986 Dietz catalog records only seven examples), with 2000 P.F. certificate

May 8 (1861)" circular datestamp on buff cover to Confederate Vice President Alexander Stephens in Montgomery Ala., docketed on back by Stephens "R.J. Dawson Greensboro Geo wants position for his son in Army. May 1861", clean and fresh, a Very Fine Confederate use of a U.S. stamp made more desirable by the addressee, examples of Stephens correspondence covers are often found with the backflap removed

May 20" (1861) manuscript postmark on 7-Star Confederate Patriotic cover to Longmire's Store S.C., stamp with couple tiny flaws and light soiling, otherwise Very Fine, a scarce Confederate use of a U.S. stamp on a Confederate patriotic cover, ex Mason, Kohn, Bleuler, second cover also pen-cancelled (stamp defective), "Greenwood Md. May 3, 1861" manuscript postmark on 7-Star Confederate Patriotic cover to Memphis Tenn., similar but slightly different design than first cover, light soiling, appears Fine, a desirable Confederate patriotic used from a southern sympathizer in a small Baltimore County, Maryland town, sent south at some risk as this was one week after Lincoln suspended habeas corpus in Maryland, with 1975 C.S.A. and 1984 P.F. certificates, a wonderful matched pair of Confederate patriotics

C.S.A. Use of U.S. Stamps. Four covers with U.S. stamps used in the C.S.A., three franked with No. 26, first a pair used on cover to Hon. Howell Cobb at the Southern Convention, Montgomery, with Charleston S.C. Feb. 5 double-circle datestamp (second day of Confederacy), other two Augusta Ga. Mar. 21 and Rome Ga. Feb. 12 datestamps, final cover is a 3c Star Die entire with "Richmond Jul. 18, 1861" circular datestamp and "Paid 5cts." two-line handstamp (the U.S. entire paid no postage), two of the No. 26 covers incl. the Cobb cover roughly opened at top, interesting group
