3c Orange Brown, Ty. I (10). Position 1R1E, margins clear to just touched at left, tied by circular grid, magenta "Hartford Ct. Jul. 1" (1851) first day of issue circular datestamp on buff cover to Uxbridge Mass., docketed at left "Hartford July 1, 1851", small corner cover stain gently cleaned, fresh and pristineVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A BEAUTIFUL AND RARE FIRST DAY COVER OF THE 1851 3-CENT ORANGE BROWN USED FROM HARTFORD.
In his census in the 1851 Sesquicentennial book, Wilson Hulme records a total of 43 covers used on July 1, 1851, which is the first day they were valid for postage, including four from Hartford. This cover (3c #4 in the Hulme census) is the only example from Hartford with the stamp tied.
