Category — 1c 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-24)
1c Blue, Ty. I (18). Plate 12, well-centered with wide margins, bright color, face-free circular datestamp, Extremely Fine, with 1988 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. I (18). Attractively centered, bright color with characteristic Plate 12 mottled impression, odd grid cancel, Very Fine
1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 92L4, well-centered for this difficult issue with large part of the bottom plumes visible, blue grid cancel, deep rich colorVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL AND SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 1857 ONE-CENT PERFORATED TYPE IA.
Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom.
Signed Raymond Weill. With 2010 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 95L4, showing clear Type Ia characteristics at bottom, deep rich color, blue grid cancelA FINE AND ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT PERFORATED TYPE IA.
With 1989 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 99R4, good centering for this issue and showing the full design at bottom (the defining characteristic of the type), rich color, "Paid" circular datestamp, defective with faults including a repair which adds a small portion of the stamp at lower left, Fine appearance and an acceptable spacefiller
1c Blue, Ty. Ic (19b). Position 82R4, clearly visible design characteristics, grid cancel, faults incl. creases and small thin spots, Fine appearance
1c Blue, Ty. II (20). Plate 2, well-centered for the tightly-spaced Plate 2, deep rich color on bright paper, town cancel, Very Fine, with 2001 P.S.E. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. II, Plate 2 Crack (20 var). Vertical pair (rejoined), Positions 13/23L2, clearly defined crack thru both stamps, deep rich color, red New York carrier cancel, centered to right which maximizes the visible portion of the crack, Fine pair of this dramatic crack, perforated examples of the Plate 2 flaw are much scarcer than imperforate, this and the following lot are among the few multiples we have offered in years
1c Blue, Ty. II, Plate 2 Crack (20 var). Vertical strip of three, Positions 2/12/22L2, huge lightning bolt crack thru top two stamps, deep rich color, light strikes of circular datestamp cancel, light horizontal crease through Pos. 12, blunted perfs on bottom stamp (not a plate crack stamp), centered to left which maximizes the visible portion of the crack, especially in Position 12 which "steals" much of the crack that is normally seen mostly on Position 13, Fine appearing strip with two examples of this dramatic and desirable variety, perforated examples of the Plate 2 flaw are much scarcer than imperforate, this and the previous lot are among the few multiples we have offered in years
1c Blue, Ty. II-IIIa (20, 22). Positions 8-10/18-20L4, block of six with selvage at right, top row Ty. II, II, II, bottom row Ty. IIIa, II, IIIa, cancelled by two strikes of town datestamp, faults with several stamps defective, partially rejoined and reinforced with hinges, still an extremely rare used block combining Ty. II and IIIa
1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Plate 4, choice centering, intense color and impression on bright paper, long and full perforations all around, light strike of circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.
Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with the perforations impinging on some portion of the design. The example offered here is centered so that the type characteristics are clearly visible.
With 2008 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $14,900.00). None have graded higher to date (nine 95's in total).
1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Plate 4, deep rich color, margins wide at top to just in at bottom but still showing the break at bottom that defines the type, light town cancel, Very Fine and choice, an attractive example of this difficult issue, with 1978 P.F. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Plate 4, choice margins and attractively centered, rich color with neat New York "U.S. Mail City Delivery" carrier datestamp, trivial corner crease top left, otherwise Very Fine and choice, with 2002 P.F. certificate

1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Position 82L1L, recut once at top and once at bottom, showing double transfer at left, lightly cancelled, deep rich color on bright paper, small thin spot along perfs at right, Fine appearance
1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Horizontal pair, deep rich color, neat circular datestamps, due to alignment problems when laying out the plate (left stamp appears "higher" than the right), the left stamp is slightly in at top and in Fine condition, whereas its neighbor to the right is essentially perfectly centered and Extremely Fine, it would be a difficult task to equal or better the right stamp for centering on this notoriously tight-margined 1c issue
1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Positions 51-52/61-62R9, block of four, original gum, h.r., center line at left with natural s.e., Position 52 showing a major double transfer at bottom, bright color, couple tiny thin spots, Very Good-Fine appearance, an attractive block with the prominent double transfer, Scott Retail as normal

1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Block of 24, original gum, rich color, few small thins, sensible hinge reinforcements throughout and perf separations, overall Fine appearance, scarce large multiple, Scott Retail as blocks of four and strips of three
1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Positions 41-42/51-52L9, block of four, with part captured imprint at left, ms. cancel, heavy crease through top pair, Fine appearance and scarce with the imprint
1c Blue, Ty. V/Va (24). Positions 86/96R5, vertical pair, the top stamp Ty. V and the bottom stamp Ty. Va, red circular datestamp, top stamp with trimmed perfs at top and horizontal crease, Fine appearance, scarce position piece combining the two types, not listed in Scott as combination
1c Blue, Ty. Va (24). Vertical strip of three, Positions 10/20/30 L5, intact perforations along the center line and showing portions of Right Pane Pos. 11/21/31, deep rich color, couple of tiny thin spots, almost Fine, interesting and scarce position piece from Plate 5, Neinken notes that Plate 5 stamps with perforations down the center line are much scarcer than those without perforations (p. 331), listed in Scott as strip of three but not priced, Scott Retail as singles
