Apalachicola, Florida, Statehood Stampless Covers. 25, including large circular datestamp used during forwarding on a cover originating in England to Apalachicola and forwarded to Augusta Ga., others show various rates including 2c, 3c, 5c, 10c, 20c, one is a double-circle datestamp from 1865 on a Reconstruction period cover to Maine, some faults but overall a Very Fine collection of this period

"Aucilla Fla. Oct. 6" (1852). Manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 3" on blue 1852 folded letter to Tallahassee, minor edgewear, Very Fine, this is reportedly the only statehood period manuscript marking from Aucilla, the post office was discontinued Dec. 7, 1854 and was reestablished in 1867

Manuscript postmark with matching "20" rate on legal-size folded cover to Clinton La., reportedly an 1846 use, missing most of top flap, expertly restored along vertical file fold at right, still Very Fine and the only reported example of this postmark, ex Light, accompanied by a second cover with "China Hill P.O. Fla. January 31st 1846" manuscript postmark to Quincy Fla., some overall toning, Very Fine, a wonderful and rare pair of covers from the statehood period

May 25th 53" manuscript postmark with matching "Paid 3" to Detroit, with original enclosure datelined "Fort Capron, Fla. May 24, 1853", Very Fine, scarce, perhaps a half dozen are known from this post office

"Miami Fla. May 15" (1850/1851). Manuscript postmark on cover from Maryland to Florida and forwarded to California, originated with "Easton Md. Jan. 18" (1850 or 1851) circular datestamp with "10" due handstamp, addressed to "Dr. J. Leonard Adkins, U.S. Army, Fort Dallas, Miami River, Florida", also with "St. Augustine Fl. T. Mar. 27" circular datestamp, forwarded to San Francisco where apparently forwarded again with instructions "Via San Diego", various rate notations (including two forwarding charges) resulting in 60c due from recipient -- the exact sequence of rates is open to interpretation -- some minor age spots, Very Fine, this cover was the subject of an article by Dr. Deane Briggs in the Florida Postal History Journal (January 2002), whether 1850 or 1851, it is noted by Dr. Briggs as the earliest recorded cover from Miami

"Miami Fla March 11 1869". Magenta manuscript postmark ties 3c Red, F. Grill (94) on cover to Key West, soiling and stamp with a couple minor perf flaws, otherwise Fine, a rare early use from Miami, accompanied by a brief article from the Florida Philatelist (Jan. 1968) stating that this is the earliest known cover from Miami (the cover in the previous lot and others are earlier), lot also includes a 3c Banknote cover with "Miami Fla Feb. 9th 82" manuscript postmark, with original letter datelined at Miami on Feb. 8, 1882, Very Fine

St. Joseph Fl. T. Apr. 14 (1845). Clear strike of circular datestamp with matching "PAID" handstamp on 1845 folded letter to New York, manuscript "25" rate, minor edgewear, Very Fine, this statehood-period use of a territorial marking from St. Joseph is remarkable, according to Wikipedia, St. Joseph was briefly the largest community in Florida until a yellow fever epidemic in 1841, in 1844 most remnants of the town were destroyed in a storm surge, this 1845 use is likely unique

Florida Statehood Stampless Covers. Approximately 190 stampless covers arranged by town, each with circular datestamp, many better including Belville, Greenwood, Melendez, Middleburg in green, Monticello in green addressed to President Polk, Warrington (2), White Springs (3), major towns are also well-represented with different colors, rates and destinations, other better, some faults to be expected but overall Fine-Very Fine, a fascinating study that would be difficult to duplicate, ASCC value approximately $15,000.00

Approximately 100 covers from Florida's statehood period with manuscript town markings, the collection is full of better markings including Alligator, Almirante, Bay Port, Beazley, Blunts Town, Camp Izard, Cedar Keys, Chestnut Hill, Clifton, Enterprise, Fort Fanning (2), Fort King (2), Garey's Ferry, Greenwood, Holmes Spring, Knox Hill, Long Pond, Madison C.H. (2), Madison, Manatee, Moseley Hall, Ocala (both handstamp and manuscript markings), Olustee, Ponce de Leon, Raulerson's Ferry, St. Marks (2), Spring Hill, Talofa (4), Uchee Anna (3), Welaka (3), Woodstock Mills, several other better, condition better than normally seen but some faults throughout, overall a Fine-Very Fine and extremely desirable group, a few may well be unique

Florida Better Miscellany. 19 items, including 1787 folded letter from Natchez, West Florida to Granville Mass. and carried outside of the mails, two part-printed post office dept. forms from examiner's office, document dated Feb. 7, 1777 from Pensacola (British Florida) of oath of an officer, eight letter from 1774 (transmittal copies) from Pensacola, 1823 folded letter from an anti-piracy patrol to St. Augustine, also a beautiful 1838 illustrated certificate for $1,000 loan from territory of Florida, 1840 folded letter from Newnansville to Hartford Conn. via Savannah, 1838 use from Garey's Ferry to Washington D.C. thru Savannah, few faults but overall a Fine-Very Fine and diverse group
