1c Blue, Ty. II-I/I-I (20-18/18-18). Positions 87-88/97-98L12, combination block of four with bottom sheet selvage, original gum, lightly hinged, fresh and bright color, centered to bottom rightFRESH AND FINE. A SCARCE SHEET-MARGIN MULTIPLE FROM PLATE 12 CONTAINING THREE TYPE I STAMPS.

1c Blue, Ty. II/I (20/18). Plate 12, vertical pair, top stamp Ty. II, bright color, neat strike of circular datestamp cancel, fresh and Very Fine
1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Plate 4, rich color and bright paper, sharp impression, light strike of blue town datestamp, centered slightly to left but showing clear breaks at top and bottomVERY FINE AND CHOICE. AN ATTRACTIVE EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT PERFORATED TYPE III STAMP WHICH CLEARLY SHOWS THE CHARACTERISTICS OF THE TYPE.
Due to narrow spacing on the plate, examples of this type often have the perforations cutting into the outer lines at either top or bottom or both. The example offered here clearly presents the characteristics of the type.

1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Unused (no gum), recut at top and bottom, deep rich color, fresh and Very Fine, the perforated 1c 1857 from Plate 1 Late is a scarce issue to obtain in sound and centered condition, especially unused
1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Recut once at top and bottom, beautiful bright shade, unobtrusive circular datestamp cancel, fresh and Fine, with 1988 P.S.E. certificate
1c Blue, Ty. IV (23). Recut once at top and twice at bottom, rich color, choice centering, light crease at top left, Very Fine appearance
1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Mint N.H., deep rich color, well-balanced margins, fresh and Extremely Fine, with 2017 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90; SMQ $1,050.00), Scott Retail as hinged
1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Radiant color, choice centering with wide margins, neat circular datestamp cancel, Extremely Fine Gem, with 2015 P.S.E. certificate (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $825.00), only five grade higher
1c Blue, Ty. Va (24 var). Positions 7-9/17-19/27-29/37-39/49/59/69R5, irregular block of 15, cancelled by "Jewett City Ct. Feb. 22" circular datestamps and "PAID" handstamps neatly applied, due to its size we did not dip this but it looks to be in excellent condition aside from a small tear in the bottom stampVERY FINE. A REMARKABLE BLOCK OF 15 OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE Va. THIS IS ONE OF THE LARGEST RECORDED MULTIPLES FROM PLATE 5.
This scarce sub-type, Type Va, comes only from Plate 5. The ornaments at right are almost complete, and they do not have any of the scratches at sides that are seen on the Type V stamps. The largest recorded multiples from Plate 5 are a block of 20, followed by this block of 15. This block is noted on pp. 324-325 of the Neinken book.
Ex Hollowbush. One stamp signed Ashbrook and with his plating notes on two stamps "7R6" and "9R6", made prior to the confirmation that there was no Plate 6.
3c Rose, Ty. I (25). Choice centering with well-proportioned margins, intense color, neat strike of circular datestamp cancel, Extremely Fine, a pretty stamp, with 2005 P.F. certificate for a pair
3c Rose, Ty. I, Imperforate Horizontally (25b var). Rich color, wide margins, with no trace of perforations at top and bottom "indicating this might have been an imperforate between" (to quote accompanying Ashbrook note), used with 10c Green, Ty. III (33) and horizontal pair of 1c Blue, Ty. V (24), Positions 14-15L8, tied by red grid cancels, matching "New York Paid 3 Nov. 28" (1857) credit datestamp on small cover to Paris, France, red Havre arrival datestamp, receiving backstamp, minor edgewear, left 1c small internal tear, 3c stamp lifted and put back into place, otherwise Very Fine and attractive, with explanatory note from Ashbrook which has note from Thomas Alexander on back opining that this is imperforate horizontally (several examples of singles are known), with 1995 P.F. certificate declining opinion, offered on its own merits
5c Brick Red (27). Bright shade, attractive margins and centering, double-struck New Orleans circular datestamp cancel with portion of red transit at top right, Very Fine, with 1990 P.F. certificate
5c Red Brown (28). Rich color nicely complemented by blue grid and circular datestamp cancels, well-balanced margins with perforations clear of outer projections on all sides, Extremely Fine, a pretty stamp
5c Red Brown (28). Rich color, nice margins and centering, double-struck circular datestamp cancel, Very Fine, purple backstamp does not show thru, with 1988 P.F. certificate
5c Indian Red (28A). Unused (no gum), wonderful intense color in the true 1858 Indian Red shade, proof-like impression on bright paper, margins clear of outer projections on all sides, reperfed at top and faint stain at bottom leftVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1858 5-CENT INDIAN RED.
Our search of old auction catalogues and the records of The Philatelic Foundation and P.S.E. yielded only eleven unused examples of Scott 28A. Of these, the majority are without gum.

5c Brown (29). Unused (no gum), choice margins and centering with perfs clear of all four outer projections, rich color, faintest trace of toning on two perf tips at bottom, reperfed at left, Very Fine appearance, with 2018 P.F. certificate
5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (30). Mint N.H., beautiful rich color, single pulled perf at top, otherwise Very Fine, with 2017 P.S.E. certificate as Brown, Scott 30A, which it is not, but confirming Mint N.H. condition -- Scott Retail as hinged No. 30
5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (30). Slightly disturbed original gum, vibrant color, well-centered with balanced margins, Very Fine, with 1982 P.F. certificate as "o.g"
5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (30). Original gum, lovely warm color on bright paper, three wide margins, fresh and Fine, with 1982 P.F. certificate

5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Wide margins for this tightly spaced issue, which is normally found touched or cut in at top or bottom, rich color, grid cancel, Very Fine and choice, with 1997 P.F. certificate
10c Green, Ty. I (31). Extra wide bottom margin shows the full scrolls that define the type, other sides nicely balanced, "San Francisco Jul. 27, 1857" circular datestamp cancel, Very Fine and choice

12c Black, Plate 3 (36B). Choice margins and centering with perfs essentially clear of design all around, intense shade and impression, neat red grid cancel, Extremely Fine, a difficult stamp to find in this condition, with 2001 P.F. certificate
24c Gray Lilac (37). Wide margins and nice centering, well-struck red grid cancel, Very Fine and choice, with 1996 P.F. certificate
30c Orange (38). Original gum, deep rich color, perfectly centered with wide margins all around, reperfed at right, Extremely Fine appearance, a stamp with great eye appeal, with 2018 P.F. certificate
