Libby Prison, Richmond Va. Folded letter datelined "Libby Prison, Richmond Va., August 27th, 1863", with "Exd EWR" examiner's marking, "Old Point Comfort Va. Sep. 1" double-circle datestamp and "Due 6" in circle handstamp, sent by Captain David S. Caldwell to his wife in Poplar O., letter mentions he is well and hopes to be exchanged, Very Fine, Capt. Caldwell was one of the individuals who escaped Libby through the famous tunnel escape of February 1864

Ligon's Tobacco Warehouse, Richmond Va. "Washington D.C. Nov. 17, 1861" circular datestamp and Congressman (and fellow prisoner) Alfred Ely's free frank on cover to Rochester N.Y., franked at the time of Ely's imprisonment in this Confederate prison, it was secretly smuggled out, some edgewear incl. small piece missing at top, Very Fine, Congressman Ely was captured while observing the First Battle of Bull Run and was ultimately released six months later
Prisoner-of-War Correspondence of Union Lt. Alonzo G. Case, 1864. Collection of six covers and letters with extensive content from Union prisoner-of-war Alonzo G. Case to his wife Julia in Simsbury Conn., incl. May 4 and May 29 from Camp Oglethorpe for Officers in Macon Ga., Sep. 20 and 26 from City Jail in Charleston S.C. (only eight recorded in Harrison), Oct. 30 and Nov. 18 from Camp Sorghum in Columbia S.C., two of the covers exchanged through Port Royal and Pocotaligo (much scarcer than Old Point Comfort), appropriate prisoner endorsements and censor markings, frankings incl. Lieutenant Case was a member of Company E of the 16th Connecticut Volunteer Infantry. He was captured April 20, 1864, in Plymouth, North Carolina, and paroled nearly a year later on March 7, 1865. During that year he was moved between prisons in Macon and Savanna Ga., Charleston and Columbia S.C. and also served a stint at the infamous Andersonville prison. 21 Rampart Street, New Orleans La. Prisoner-of-war cover addressed to a lady at No. 93 Camp Street in New Orleans, censored twice by Federal officers, "Respect forward Z.K. Wood Lt Commdg Prison", on reverse and "Exd. & forwarded Wm Sterling Capt. 1st U.S. Infty. Comiy of Prisoners" on front, clear "New Orleans May 23" (1865) circular datestamp and "3" due handstamp, small erosion hole in address panelVERY FINE. A RARE PRISONER-OF-WAR COVER FROM 21 RAMPART STREET, WHICH WAS USED AS A UNION PRISON FROM 1863 TO 1865. FEWER THAN FIVE COVERS ARE RECORDED.
21 Rampart street was a residence that was used to hold Confederate officers, including those captured at Fort Hudson in July 1863 (Harrison p. 143). Captain William H. Sterling was Commissary of Prisoners in 1865 when this cover was sent.

Some of the better items include two 1861 Written Dates -- $100.00 Type 5 and $50.00 Type 6, 1861 Types 16, 17 (five incl. the rare without "For"), 19, 21 (three), 24, 25, 26 (three, one defective), the rare Type 27 ("Ab", serial no. 1379, corner repair), 29, 31, 33, 34, 37 (three), 1862 Types 41 (three), 43, 50, others from 1863, 1864 Types 64 and 65 (two). Most of the more common issues are also represented, some in quantity (more than 90 of Type 36). A number of scarce to rare items will also be found in the more than 90 state and local issue notes.
