24c Gray Lilac, 30c Orange, 90c Blue, Imperforate (37c, 38a, 39a). Complete set, ample margins to clear, without gum as issued, rich colors, 24c and 90c tiny thin spots, 30c pressed horizontal creaseFINE-VERY APPEARANCE. A SCARCE COMPLETE SET OF THE 1860 IMPERFORATE ISSUE. THIS IS A RARE OPPORTUNITY TO ACQUIRE ALL THREE VALUES OF THIS IMPERFORATE VARIETY AT ONCE.
According to Brookman, the 24c, 30c and 90c 1860 Imperforates come from a trial printing of the finished designs submitted to the Postmaster General for final opinion. The designs and colors match the regular issues (unlike essays and trial color proofs). For many years these were listed in the front of Scott Catalogue. Only one pair of the 90c is known, which we sold in our 1994 Rarities sale.
Ex Fekete. With 1989, 1988 and 1988 P.F. certificates respectively
24c Gray Lilac (37). Original gum, well-centered, bright color, fresh and Very Fine, with 1998 P.F. certificate
24c Gray Lilac (37). Choice centering, tied by red grid cancel on piece of 1c Blue Star Die (U19) entire, fresh and Extremely Fine, with 1979 and 1991 P.F. certificates, the latter declining opinion as to whether the 1c represents a carrier use (what else could it be? a 25c rate to Denmark?)
30c Orange (38). Block of four, original gum, h.r., radiant color as fresh as the day it was printed, few minor internal perf separations affect top stampsFINE. A SCARCE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE.
This block clearly demonstrates why it is so difficult to find this issue with choice centering. The narrow space between subjects on the plate makes it almost impossible for the perforations to clear the design on all four sides.
Ex Frelinghuysen
30c Orange (38). Block of four, original gum, slightly oxidized, bottom right stamp trivial natural inclusion, top right stamp sealed tear at upper leftVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE.

90c Blue (39). Deep rich color, neat strike of grid of small rectangles of Philadelphia cancel, tiny tear at top, small thin spot at top right, light toning at bottom rightFINE APPEARANCE. A SCARCE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE WITH WHAT IS ESSENTIALLY A FANCY CANCELLATION.
Most used examples of the 90c 1860 Issue have either a circular datestamp, standard killer or pen cancel. The stamp offered here, with an unusual cancel consisting of a grid of small rectangles, is an extremely unusual example of a non-standard killer cancel on the 90c 1860.
