1c-90c 1857 Reprints, Atlanta Trial Color Proofs on Card (40TC4-47TC4). Complete set of all five colors for each of the eight denominations, mostly ample margins with a few cut just in on one side, gorgeous colors throughoutVERY FINE. A RARE COMPLETE SET OF THE ATLANTA TRIAL COLOR PROOFS FOR THE 1857 ISSUE.
The Atlanta trial color plate proofs on card were prepared for display at the 1881 International Cotton Exposition in Atlanta. Only one sheet of 100 of each value/color was printed. Very few have been kept together as intact sets
1c Bright Blue, Reprint (40). Without gum as issued, choice centering with wide margins, bright color, Extremely Fine, with 1995 P.F. certificate
1c Bright Blue, Reprint (40). Without gum as issued, block of four, radiant color, bottom right stamp single short perf, otherwise Very Fine
3c Scarlet, Reprint (41). Without gum as issued, remarkably well-centered, most unusual for this tightly-spaced issue, magnificent color and impressionVERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1857 REPRINT.
The Continental Bank Note Company made a new plate for the 3c 1857 Reprint, consisting of 100 subjects. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). 479 of the 3c were sold, and the remaining 9,521 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General.
With 1989 P.F. certificate
5c Orange Brown, Reprint (42). Without gum as issued, radiant color, fresh and Very Fine, only 878 sold, with 1974 and 1998 P.F. certificates
10c Blue Green, Reprint (43). Without gum as issued, deep rich color on bright paper, unusually wide margins and choice centeringVERY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1857 REPRINT. SCARCE WITH SUCH WIDE MARGINS.
The Continental Bank Note Company made a new plate for the 10c 1857 Reprint, consisting of 100 subjects, using an original transfer roll. 10,000 stamps were printed (100 impressions). All are Type I stamps. 516 of the 10c were sold, and the remaining 9,484 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General.
With 1996 P.F. certificate
12c Greenish Black, Reprint (44). Without gum as issued, intense shade and proof-like impression, unusually precise centeringVERY FINE AND CHOICE EXAMPLE OF THE 12-CENT 1857 REPRINT.
The narrow spaces between stamps on the 12c 1857 Reprint plate allowed almost no room for large 12-gauge perforations, and the Reprints were generally perforated into parts of the design. Examples such as this, with the framelines complete on all four sides, are extremely rare.
With 2003 P.F. certificate
24c Blackish Violet, Reprint (45). Without gum as issued, deep rich color, short perf at left not mentioned on certificate, otherwise Very Fine, only 479 sold, with 1997 P.F. certificate
30c Yellow Orange, Reprint (46). Without gum as issued, brilliant color on bright fresh paper, usual tight margins but very well-centeredVERY FINE. A BEAUTIFULLY CENTERED EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1860 REPRINT.
The Continental Bank Note Company reprinted the 30c stamp from the original plate of 200 subjects. 10,000 were printed (50 impressions). Only 480 were sold; the remaining 9,520 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General.
With 1995 P.F. certificate
90c Deep Blue, Reprint (47). Without gum as issued, deep rich color on bright paper, unusually well-centeredVERY FINE AND CHOICE CXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1857 REPRINT.
The Continental Bank Note Company reprinted the 90c stamp from the original plate of 200 subjects. 10,000 were printed (50 impressions). Only 454 were sold; the remaining 9,546 were destroyed on July 23, 1884, by order of the Postmaster General.
