5c Dark Blue, Colored Border, 1865 Issue (PR1). Without gum as issued, attached to piece of newspaper, blue brushstroke cancel, perfs partly trimmed away, tear at top leftVERY FINE APPEARANCE. A RARE EXAMPLE OF THE FIRST NEWSPAPER ISSUE STILL ATTACHED TO PART OF A NEWSPAPER. ONLY A HANDFUL ARE KNOWN.
When a wrapper wasn't used, the stamp was affixed to the outermost newspaper in the stack to indicate payment. Most were destroyed or soaked off the newspaper. The example offered here, with virtually intact newspaper on back, is a great rarity.
