30c Orange (38). Intense shade and impression, cancelled by perfect strike of red large Circular Grid of Diamonds of New Haven Conn.VERY FINE AND CHOICE. A PHENOMENAL EXAMPLE OF THE 30-CENT 1860 ISSUE CANCELLED BY THE NEW HAVEN GRID OF DIAMONDS.

Vibrant color, cancelled by perfect strike of "UNION" surrounding 5-Point Hollow Star with "US" at center of Three Rivers, Michigan, the "S" of "US" reversedEXTREMELY FINE STRIKE OF THIS ELABORATE AND RARE PATRIOTIC FANCY CANCELLATION. PATRIOTIC CANCELS ARE ESPECIALLY RARE ON HIGH-DENOMINATION 1860 ISSUE STAMPS, WHICH WERE INFREQUENTLY USED AND DEMONETIZED SOON AFTER THE START OF THE CIVIL WAR.

30c Orange, Cracked Plate (38 var). Showing significant plate crack in back of Franklin's head, bold strike of large open grid leaves the plate crack clearly visible, Fine, a rare plate variety, Brookman illustrates what he says is a unique plate crack at lower left and questions whether that is a scratch, the stamp offered here with its different crack must have been unknown to him and is far more prominent than the one he was aware of, ex Koppersmith, with 1988 P.F. certificate, the variety is listed but unpriced in Scott and this stamp may well be unique
90c Blue (39). Deep rich color and proof-like impression on bright paper, choice centering with well-proportioned margins, neat strike of blue circular datestamp (probably Baltimore Md.)EXTREMELY FINE. A STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE, WITH GORGEOUS CENTERING AND A BLUE CIRCULARE DATESTAMP CANCEL.
The 90c stamp was issued in 1860, along with the 24c and 30c values, all of which were needed to prepay high international letter rates established by various postal treaties. The basic 24c and 30c rates to England, France and Germany created a volume of mail franked with those values. However, the 90c saw much more limited use, partly due to the rates in effect, but more because of the American Civil War. When supplies of current postage stamps were declared invalid in the South and ultimately demonetized by the Federal government, the 90c had been in use for only one year. For this reason, genuinely cancelled copies are scarce, and covers bearing the 90c are extremely rare.

Approximately 180 used examples have been certified by The Philatelic Foundation, of which one-quarter are sound. The example offered here, with the New York Ocean Mail cancel, is extremely desirable.

Most used examples of the 90c 1860 Issue have either a circular datestamp, standard killer or pen cancel. The stamp offered here, with an unusual cancel consisting of a grid of small rectangles, is an extremely unusual example of a non-standard killer cancel on the 90c 1860.
