5c Red Brown (1). Rich color, torn roughly from sheet at right with part of adjoining stamp, large margins top and left, tied by multiple strikes of blue "5" handstamp with matching "Salem N.Y. Dec. 10" circular datestamp, on 1849 blue folded cover to Manchester Vt., light file fold thru stamp at top, Very Fine appearance, a rare use of the 5c 1847 Issue from Salem, which received only 1,200 5c and 100 10c stamps, one of only two covers recorded in the Alexander census, the postal clerk who cancelled the stamp zealously applied the stampless rate marking
