Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Blue on Thin Bond (117L3). Horizontal pair, large to huge margins, left stamp creased by file fold, manuscript cancels on Jul. 27, 1844 folded letter from Lockport N.Y. to Boston, conjunctive use with red "Forwarded by Hale & Co. Albany" handstamp, some slight waterstaining around left stampVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE COMBINATION OF A PAIR OF POMEROY STAMPS AND CONJUNCTIVE USE WITH HALE & COMPANY FOR SERVICE BETWEEN ALBANY AND BOSTON.
This letter was carried by Pomeroy from Lockport to Albany, then by Hale & Co. to Boston. The stamps paid the Pomeroy 5c and Hale 5c rates. Any on-cover use of a pair of a Pomeroy stamp is rare. We record six pairs of Pomeroy's Blue stamp on covers. A very similar cover to this one realized $4,000 hammer in our 1999 sale of the Golden collection.

Pomeroy's Letter Express, 5c Deep Milky Blue on Pelure Paper (117L7). Complete left pane of 20, huge margins, including enormous sheet margins on three sides, beautiful rich color in the distinctive Deep Milky Blue shade, horizontal crease between rows 3 and 4, natural pre-printing paper crease in Positions 13L and 17L, few other faint creases do not detractEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A RECENTLY RECORDED PANE OF THE POMEROY'S LETTER EXPRESS STAMP IN DEEP MILKY BLUE ON PELURE PAPER, OF WHICH VERY FEW EXAMPLES ARE KNOWN.
This pane is printed in the distinctive Deep Milky Blue shade on very thin, nearly transparent paper. Prior to the discovery of this pane, only a few examples of Scott 117L7 were known. The Philatelic Foundation has certified this as "onion-skin paper" (an unlisted variety of 117L7), but in our opinion there is no such thing as a Pomeroy stamp on "onion skin paper," and this paper matches the other known examples of Scott 117L7, so we are not really sure why the P.F. felt compelled to create a new unlisted paper variety to describe this pane.
With 2012 P.F. certificate.
