1c, 2c Trans-Mississippi (285-286). 1c is complete set of matched top and bottom imprint and plate no. pairs from the 14 different plates (28 pairs) used to print this denomination, 2c is a complete set of matched top and bottom imprint and plate no. pairs from the 121 different plates (242 pairs) used to produce this denomination, and includes the set of plate no. 691 which is considered to be the rarest of all the 149 different plates used to produce the Trans-Mississippi series, it is reasonable to assume that the dollar values would be much scarcer but there are perhaps hundreds of the $1.00 and $2.00 plate numbers in the hands of collectors, while as far as can be ascertained, there are less that two dozen known pairs of 2c plate no. 691, the reason being is on the morning of the first day plate 691 was put to press it was accidentally damaged beyond repair after only a few sheets were printed, the stamps in this lot are probably all original gum, and some are going to be Mint N.H., there may be a few flaws but really of no consequence, a lifetime in its formation and a tribute to a determined collector who searched for over 40 years to make this collection complete
