Two covers with ms. steamboat markings, first No. 11A ample to full margins, pen-cancelled with matching "Steamer GM Relf" written in a different hand from the address and so most likely applied by the route agent, on cover to New Orleans, Very Fine, second cover with No. 26, pen-cancelled, on June 1860 way bill to Urbana Va. via Chesapeake Bay and Rappahannock River, endorsed via schooner Mary Anna, ms "Steam Boat 2 cts. due" (in error as the 2c fee was eliminated in April 1855 and not reinstated until 1861), cover forwarded to Saluda Va. with no additional forwarding postage charged, interesting and unusual use

Clear strike of red two-line handstamp on folded cover to Cape Palmas, (Liberia) West Africa, docketing on back indicates New York origin, light vertical file fold well clear of marking, Very Fine, extremely scarce and desirable use, the recipient, Dr. Thomas S. Savage, graduated from Yale Medical College, was the first missionary sent to Africa under the auspices of the Protestant Episcopal Church, he was in Cape Palmas starting in 1836, returned to America and then came back in 1839 with his new wife, who died of disease in 1842, later he would publish information about a previously unknown variety of mammal, the gorilla -- this forwarding agent marking is unlisted in Rowe
