HAWAII, 1860, 1c-3c Die Essays on Thin Pale Buff Card. Nine, including two 1c, four 2c and three 3c with no duplication, two stamp size, others large margins, some toned spots, otherwise Fine-Very Fine, in November 1860, the Postmaster General, Alvah K. Clark, wrote to John S. Marsh in Boston to order a new supply of 5c Kamehameha III stamps and inquired at the same time about the possibility of obtaining 1c and 2c stamps for inter-island use (to replace the Numerals), dies in three denominations were prepared and trial proofs were struck from the dies, but for some reason the stamps were rejected, one year later the lithographed Kamehameha IV stamp was issued

Each with clear "Specimen" ovpt., including several different styles, unused (no gum), few faults including one with few trimmed perfs, still Fine, a rare and desirable group from an old-time collection, No. 52S with 1976 P.F. certificate

Horizontal strip of five with selvage on three sides, center stamp the variety, original gum, the variety Mint N.H. but with small pinhole at lower right, Very Fine appearance, interesting position multiple, Scott Retail for just the variety
HAWAII, 1893, 1c Blue, Red Ovpt., Category III Double Overprint (54f). Vertical pair, both show part of second overprint which is split vertically, original gum, small h.r. at top, few toned spots on back barely show thru, Fine appearance, attractive multiple, Scott Retail as singles

HAWAII, 1893, 2c Dull Violet, Inverted Red Ovpt. (57g). Unused (no gum), rich color, some slight overall toning, Fine appearance, scarce, only two sheets of this 2c overprint were printed upside down
HAWAII, 1893, 5c Ultramarine, Category I Double Red Ovpt. (59d). Horizontal pair with part imprint selvage at left, left stamp the error with strong double overprint, also showing trace of additional overprint at far left of selvage, part disturbed original gum, few minor perf separations between stamps sensibly reinforced (intact between stamp and selvage)VERY FINE. AN EXTREMELY RARE EXAMPLE OF THE 1893 5-CENT PROVISIONAL GOVERNMENT DOUBLE OVERPRINT. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE PART IMPRINT SELVAGE.
Only ten stamps in one sheet were doubly overprinted (Category I), of which eight surviving examples are reported.

HAWAII, 1893, 10c Red Brown, Red Overprint Error (61B). Original gum, h.r., bright colorFRESH AND FINE. A RARE SOUND ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1893 10-CENT RED OVERPRINT ERROR. ONLY ONE SHEET OF FIFTY WAS ISSUED.
Two errors of the 1893 Provisional Government Overprint Issues were made. One sheet of the 10c Red Brown, normally overprinted in black, was overprinted in red (Scott 61B). One sheet of the 6c Green, normally overprinted in red, was overprinted in black (Scott 66C). According to an affidavit by Louis T. Kenake, clerk of the Stamp Division of the Republic of Hawaii, the 10c sheet was issued to the postmaster at Kahuka, Oahu (Meyer-Harris, p. 240). The 6c sheet was purchased by Postmaster Jos. M. Oat and sometime around 1901 most of it was sold to dealer J. H. Makins, probably on behalf of Henry J. Crocker. The San Francisco earthquake is said to have destroyed a number of examples of both the overprint errors.
