CANAL ZONE, 1962, 4c Thatcher Ferry Bridge, Silver (Bridge) Omitted (157a). Position 11, Mint N.H. with left selvage, brilliant colors on bright paperEXTREMELY FINE EXAMPLE OF THE THATCHER FERRY BRIDGE ERROR WITH SELVAGE AT LEFT. ONLY ONE PANE OF 50 WAS EVER ISSUED.
According to Canal Zone Stamps, one sheet, consisting of four panes of 50, was printed. Three panes were caught by postal authorities, while the fourth pane of 50 was sent to H. E. Harris & Co. as part of a larger order from the Canal Zone Philatelic Agency. At the same time this error was printed, the U.S. had issued the Dag Hammarskjold error in huge quantities. The Canal Zone authorities made plans to do the same, but were successfully sued by H. E. Harris, and the larger printing never took place. The pane was broken up in 1969.

Type II (right-hand position in form), large margins, segmented cork cancel leaving numeral "5" clearly visible, skillfully rebacked to preserve pelure paper, tiny flaws, a small part of frameline at top left painted inEXTREMELY FINE APPEARANCE. A REMARKABLY ATTRACTIVE USED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE HAWAIIAN MISSIONARY 5-CENT BLUE. ONE OF THE FINER EXAMPLES KNOWN OF THIS MAJOR WORLDWIDE PHILATELIC RARITY.

HAWAII, 1857, 5c on 13c Dark Red (7). Type I (Clark) numeral surcharge with long flag, unused (no gum), full margins to just touchedFINE. A RARE SOUND UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 5-CENT ON 13-CENT PROVISIONAL SURCHARGE.
The 5c provisional surcharge was necessary due to a shortage of 5c stamps just after the transition from Postmaster Whitney to Jackson. Most were made by Jackson's clerk, Alvah Clark, around the start of 1857. New supplies of the 5c stamp (Scott No. 8) were received at the end of June 1857.

The tiny flaws do not detract from the beautiful appearance of this scarce unused 1c Light Blue Numeral stamp, and they will certainly make it more affordable for most collectors.

Examples of the 2c Blue Numeral with handstamped cancellations are considerably more desirable than pen-cancelled copies.

The 2c Dark Blue on Bluish paper (Scott 17) was printed after Scott 18 and before Scott 20. It is one of the rarest of all Numeral Issues in either unused or used condition, and almost all known examples have small faults. The example offered here is rare with a trace of gum at top.
