Rich color, light strike of blue 1871 datestamp, faults as always for this issue including several creases, otherwise Fine, Scott Catalogue notes "Nearly all examples of No. R31 are faulty and poorly centered. The catalogue value is for a fine centered stamp with minor faults which do not detract from its appearance."

Brilliant color, large margins to full, bold strike of "A&W Sprague Nov. ? 1863" circular datestamp, fresh and Very Fine, brothers Amasa and William Sprague founded this firm in Cranston Rhode Island, William was a United States Senator and Amasa, who ran the textile plant, was brutally bludgeoned to death on Dec. 31, 1843, the resultant arrest of three Irish-Catholic brothers named Gordon led to what historians have called the "trial of the century" in Rhode Island

We have offered only one other stamp identified as R81b since 1996 -- from the Curtis Collection, which realized $10,500 hammer -- and despite a previous 1996 P.F. certificate as genuine, it subsequently received a negative P.F. certificate.

A Power Search review found only one other R83a with a handstamp cancel offered in our auctions since 1994 (part of a reconstructed strip of three in our 2014 sale of the Curtis Collection).
