Black, Blue and Orange Vermilion on India, Black on Bond and issued color on Bond, from 28 x 32mm to 42 x 52mm, bright colors, few small imperfectionsVERY FINE. This is a difficult group to duplicate and is highly exhibitable.

Scott value as strip of three and single does not remotely reflect premium for a strip of this size
5c Red Orange (1c). Huge margins to ample at top showing part of adjoining stamp at bottom, marvelous Red Orange color, nicely complemented by red grid cancelVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE FOUR-MARGIN SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE RED ORANGE SHADE. THIS IS ONE OF THE MOST ELUSIVE SHADES TO OBTAIN IN ANY CONDITION.
As an indication of rarity, we have not offered an example of this shade since December 2004.

5c Red Orange (1c). Large margins to clear, brilliant color in the true Red Orange shade, light strike of red cancelVERY FINE AND CHOICE USED EXAMPLE OF THE RARE 5-CENT 1847 ISSUE IN THE RED ORANGE COLOR.
This is the scarcest Scott-listed 5c 1847 shade and is rarely offered in sound four-margin condition. This stamp was expertized as Red Orange by the late Calvet M. Hahn and has the most vivid color we have encountered in years.
10c Black (2). Original gum with very slight disturbance from hinge removal, large margins to just in at top, bright shade and detailed early impression, usual light natural gum creasesFINE APPEARANCE. A RARE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE.
This stamp was hinged in the space for the 10c 1875 Reproduction (Scott 4) in a National album donated to The Western Reserve Historical Society. Not only is it the original 10c 1847 (Scott 2), but it has full original gum. It was probably "found" by an amateur philatelist and misidentified (one of the rare cases in which the discoverer chooses the least valuable option!). A great stamp and great story.

Turner in South Boston Mass., first with overlapping singles of 5c from a later printing, tied by red grids, matching "Saint Louis Mo. 10 Jun. 17" integral-rate circular datestamp, second with single 10c tied by red "Saint Louis Mo. 10 Nov. 26" integral-rate circular datestamp, latter with tiny cover tear at topEXTREMELY FINE. A MARVELOUS MATCHING PAIR OF 5-CENT AND 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE COVERS FROM THE CELEBRATED TURNER CORRESPONDENCE. ARTISTICALLY FRANKED AND BEAUTIFULLY PRESERVED.
The 5c cover is ex Greene, Sweet and Haas. The 10c cover is ex Emerson. A similar set of covers, differing only in that the 10c also had two overlapping singles, realized $15,000 hammer in our 1992 auction of the Kapiloff collection.

Matching pair of folded letters to Pilkington Brothers & Co. in Blackburn, England: 5c horizontal pair (Positions 99-100R) in deep Red Brown shade with full even margins, tied by black grids, "New Orleans La. Jan. 16" (1848) circular datestamp, "1/-" rate handstamp also tying pair, "America/Liverpool/FE 13/1848" transit datestamp and Blackburn (Feb. 14) receiving datestamp on back, letter written on printed prices-current list; 10c (Position 30R) with full to large margins, intense shade and impression, tied by black grid, "New Orleans La. May 7" (1848) circular datestamp, "1/-" rate handstamp, Liverpool (May 30, 1848) and Blackburn (May 31) backstampsAN EXTREMELY FINE AND SPECTACULAR MATCHED PAIR OF 1847 ISSUE COVERS TO ENGLAND. TOGETHER THEY FORM AN OUTSTANDING EXHIBITION PAGE.
Both covers offered here were carried by Cunard steamships during the period when mail transported on American packets was subjected to a British charge of one shilling, which led to the U.S. Retaliatory Rate period from July to December 1848. The 5c cover was carried on the Cunarder Cambria, departing from New York on Jan. 29, 1848, and arriving at Liverpool on Feb. 13. The 10c cover was carried on the Cunarder Britannia, departing from Boston on May 17, 1848, and arriving at Liverpool on May 30.
