1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Deep rich color, choice centering for this difficult issue with fairly wide horizontal perforation setting, lightly cancelled by town datestamp, tiny corner perf crease at top leftVERY FINE APPEARING USED EXAMPLE OF THE SCARCE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE IA, SCOTT 19.
Examples of the perforated Type Ia with wide top and bottom margins sell for a premium.
1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Clear breaks at top and bottom, dark color on fresh white paper, light circular datestamp leaves most of design clearly visible, choice centeringEXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III PERFORATED ISSUE.

1c Blue, Ty. IIIa-III-III (22-21-21). Positions 21-23L4, horizontal strip of three, both stamps at right with clear breaks in top and bottom lines, deep rich Plate 4 color, scissors-separated with intact perfs and part of sheet margin at left, tied by two light strikes of blue "Baltimore Md. Nov. 11" circular datestamp on buff cover to Arnoldsburgh Va., traces of a portion of 3c stamp beneath right 1cVERY FINE STRIP AND COVER. MULTIPLES OF THE ONE-CENT 1851-57 TYPE III ARE EXTREMELY RARE, AS THERE WERE ONLY A FEW ADJOINING TYPE III POSITIONS ON THE PLATES.
There are only a small number of adjoining Type III positions on Plate 4, which produced both imperforate and perforated stamps. Type III pairs are extremely rare. The righthand pair shows clear breaks in the lines at top and bottom. Position 23L4 is a "swing" position, which transformed from Type IIIa to Type III as the plate wore.

1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Bright shade, minor toned spots, tied by blue "Baltimore Md. Paid" circular handstamp (without date) on red and blue 7-Star Flag Confederate Patriotic cover turned into a wrapper to Chillicothe O., stamp with few toned spots from gumVERY FINE. EXTREMELY RARE USE OF A CONFEDERATE PATRIOTIC COVER-TURNED-WRAPPER TO MAIL PRINTED MATTER FROM A SOUTHERN SYMPATHIZER IN BALTIMORE.

3c Dull Red, Ty. II (26). Left imprint and plate no. 23P block of eight, original gum, most stamps Mint N.H., others very lightly hinged, bright and fresh, few sensibly reinforced perf separations in selvageA FINE AND BEAUTIFUL PLATE BLOCK OF THE 1857 PERFORATED 3-CENT DULL RED TYPE II ISSUE.

5c Brick Red (27). Horizontal pair, beautiful bright shade, few short perfs at right, tied by "Mokelumne Hill Cal." circular datestamp on yellow cover to Red Bank N.J., minor edge wear, Very Fine, extremely rare use of the 5c Brick Red from this small California post office, 5c Brick Red covers are generally quite scarce and anything other than a usage to France is very desirable, ex Sevenoaks
5c Red Brown (28). Vertical strip of three, perfs scissors-separated leaving intact perfs on three sides and trimmed at bottom, tied by clear strikes of "New Orleans La. Oct. 2, 1857" circular datestamps on blue folded letter to Paris, France, red "New York Paid 6 Oct. 10" credit datestamp, receiving backstamp, stamps affected by light horizontal cover bend, appears Fine, scarce usage, from the same correspondence as the vertical strip of three of No. 12 offered in lot 35, this October 1857 usage pre-dates the Red Brown printing (the shade is the 1856 No. 12 shade), with 1982 Diena certificate
5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Original gum, single hinge mark at top, rich color and detailed impression, choice centering with wide margins for this difficult issueVERY FINE AND CHOICE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1860 5-CENT BROWN TYPE II ISSUE.

Mch. 8/59" ms. postmark on folded cover to Switzerland, red "New York Am. Pkt. Mar. 25" circular datestamp, British accountancy handstamp, red crayon rating, red "SHORT PAID"%$ handstamp, transit and receiving backstamps, one 1c stamp faulty, cover with few small age bleach spots, otherwise Very Fine, a rare and unusual Texas transatlantic cover to Switzerland, the differences in shade and condition of the two 1c stamps -- one of which shows traces of another cancel -- points to small-town re-use of cancelled stamps, with 2001 P.F. certificate

(30c) Black, Die Essay on India of Incomplete Design (Unlisted in Scott or Brazer; our 38-E1 var). On 37 x 45mm card, lacking text and numerals at top, bottom and sides, detailed impressionVERY FINE. 90c Black, Large Die Trial Color Proof on India (39TC1). Die sunk on 80 x 89mm card with full die sinkage, intense shade and impressionVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A REMARKABLY RARE LARGE DIE TRIAL COLOR PROOF FOR THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE.
Scott Catalogue lists only two colors of the 90c large die trial color proof: Black and Brown Orange. We have only offered one other in Black, which did not show full die sinkage
90c Blue (39). Original gum, single h.r., perfectly centered with wide balanced margins all around, bright shade and well-formed perforationsEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE. SCARCE WITH SUCH PRECISE CENTERING AND EXTRA WIDE MARGINS ALL AROUND.

Choice centering with unusually wide margins for this difficult issue, deep rich color and proof-like impression, black grid and also part of red London circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A MAGNIFICENT USED EXAMPLE OF THE 90-CENT 1860 ISSUE. THIS IS EASILY ONE OF THE WIDEST-MARGINED EXAMPLES IN EXISTENCE. ESPECIALLY DESIRABLE WITH THE RED LONDON CIRCULAR DATESTAMP.
Used examples of Scott 39 are considerably scarcer than unused copies, as they were valid for a short period of time and were only used to pay high postage rates.
