Category — 1857-60 Issue (Scott 18-39)
1c Blue, Ty. I (18). Original gum, wide margins at sides, bright color, unusual unprinted area on forehead caused by foreign matter adhering to plate, Very Fine
1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Unused (no gum), perfs scissors-separated but mostly intact, choice centering for this difficult issue, showing the type characteristics very well, trivial toned spot at bottom right, small thin spot in Franklin's headFINE APPEARANCE. A RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 PERFORATED ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.
Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom. For this reason, stamps from the bottom row of Plate 4 with perforations slightly into the design are still desirable.
With 1961 P.F. certificate as sound. Scott Retail as no gum
1c Blue, Ty. Ia (19). Position 96L4, deep rich color, face-free cancel leaves design characteristics clearly visibleFINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE PERFORATED 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.
Type Ia was produced by only 18 of the 20 bottom-row positions on Plate 4. Although Plate 4 was designed with sufficient space to accommodate perforations, the height of the top row and bottom row positions resulted in the perforations often cutting into the design at either top or bottom.
With 2007 P.F. certificate

Positions 96-98R4, horizontal strip of three, left stamp Type Ic, rich color, each stamp with manuscript "X" cancel which is lightened, right stamp with vertical and diagonal creases, left two stamps soundFINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE STRIP OF THREE COMBINING TWO TYPE Ia STAMPS AND THE SUB-TYPE Ic. THE SCOTT 19b FROM POSITION 96R4 IS ONE OF THE BEST EXAMPLES OF THE TYPE.
Accompanied by cover on which this reportedly originated. With 2008 P.F. certificate. Scott Catalogue lists but does not price a combination pair of Scott 19 and 19b. This is the first we have offered since 2001. Scott Retail as pair of No. 19 and single 19b
1c Blue, Ty. Ic (19b). Position 91R4, deep rich color, red and blue cancels, small stain at lower left, otherwise Fine, this is from one of the two best positions of Scott 19b, with 2007 P.F. certificate

1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Plate 4, beautifully balanced margins and proof-like impression, deep rich color, barely cancelled in top perfs, appears unused at a glanceEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III, GRADED XF-SUPERB 95 BY P.S.E.
Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with the perforations impinging on a portion of the design. The example offered here is centered so that the breaks in both the bottom and top lines are clearly visible.
Ex Kirke. With 1994 P.F. and 2005 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95; SMQ $9,7500.00). None grade higher.

A GORGEOUS EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT PERFORATED TYPE III.
Due to narrow spacing on the plate, examples of this type often have the perforations cutting into the outer lines at either top or bottom or both. The example offered here clearly presents the characteristics of the type.
With 2001 P.F. certificate noting the plating, which is independently confirmed by expert Richard Celler. With 2017 P.S.E. certificate not noting plating and describing this as Type IIIa (Scott 22), which it clearly is not. Also accompanied by No. 466 Mint N.H., reperfed
1c Blue, Ty. III, Position 99R2 (21). Centered to top left which affords a clear view of the extra wide break at bottom and major double transfer at right, unobtrusive cancel, defective, still a useful reference copy of the very rare 1c perforated Ty. 5c Brick Red (27). Original gum, rich color, some soiling and staining, small thin spot in forehead not mentioned on accompanying certificateFINE APPEARANCE. A RARE AND AFFORDABLE ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT BRICK RED.
After surveying dozens of classic United States sale catalogues, we found approximately 25 examples of Scott 27 with original gum, allowing for duplicate offerings and excluding the one known original-gum block. Of the stamps we counted, about half had perfs touching on two sides or were deeply cut into on one side. Almost two-thirds had stains or faults. This is a very presentable example of this rare stamp.
With 1971 P.F. certificate
5c Bright Red Brown (28b). Unused (regummed), marvelous deep color, centered to left with perfs slightly into outer projection, few tiny perf flaws at bottom and lower right are not particularly noticeableFINE APPEARANCE. AN EXTREMELY RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1857 BRIGHT RED BROWN SHADE.
This is only the second unused example of the sub-listed Bright Red Brown shade variety of Scott 28 we have offered. In our analysis of the 5c 1856-61 printings, we consider the Bright Red Brown (28b) and Indian Red (28A) to be in the same printing family. The Bright Red Brown shade is usually the default classification for a stamp that does not have sufficiently intense color to receive an Indian Red classification, but the difference is very subtle. In fact, unused examples of the Bright Red Brown (Scott 28b) shade appear to be rarer than the Indian Red.
With 2014 P.F. certificate
5c Bright Red Brown (28b). Deep rich color, well-centered with wide margins, light circular datestamp cancels, fresh and Very Fine, with 1994 P.S.E. certificate

The 1857 10c Type IV stamps come from eight positions scattered throughout Plate 1 that have the top, bottom or both lines recut. Only 4% of all 10c Plate 1 stamps produced were Type IV's, and an even smaller percentage were issued with perforations. Most are either faulty, off-center or both.
