AN EXTREMELY RARE 1847 SHADE, ESPECIALLY IN UNUSED CONDITION. THIS STAMP IS THE STRONGEST RED ORANGE WE HAVE ENCOUNTERED.
This stamp was found in an old-time album that surfaced in Europe last year. It has been protected from light exposure for most of its life, which has preserved the Red Orange color to a degree rarely encountered among the few known examples.
With 2016 P.F. certificate. Scott value for unused without gum is $9,500.00, which is the same as the used value, despite the fact that unused examples are many times rarer
5c Red Orange (1c). Margins mostly full and clear at bottom, brilliant color, appears unused but certificate states cancellation removed (we disagree), horizontal crease, Fine appearing example of this rare shade, with 2016 P.F. certificate
10c Black (2). Unused (no gum), three large margins, just in at bottom frame, intense shade, small pressed crease at top rightFINE APPEARANCE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND RARE UNUSED EXAMPLE OF THE 10-CENT 1847 ISSUE.
The 1847 Issue is much scarcer in unused condition than other issues, because the stamps were demonetized in 1851. They could be exchanged for the new issue, but once the exchange period ended, the stamps would have no postage value. Considering the purchasing power of ten cents in 1851, it is not surprising that the stamps were either used or exchanged, rather than left for future generations of collectors
