Ex Caspary and "European". 2015 P.S.E. certificate no longer accompanies (VF-XF 85; SMQ $4,250.00). With 2016 P.F. certificate (XF 90). Considering the large margins and exceptional eye appeal of this stamp, as well as the fact that the 1956 Caspary catalogue described it as "Extremely Fine," we feel the P.F. was more on target with its XF 90 grade than was P.S.E.

Position 66R4, deep rich Plate 4 color on bright paper, detailed impression, large margins all around, clear breaks in outer lines at top and bottom, face-free cancel leaves the design characteristics clearly visibleEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE III FROM PLATE FOUR.
Type III is defined as having breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. Since the wear occurred over a period of time, the majority of stamps of this type (both unused and used) have small breaks in at least one line.

Position 77L1E, large margins to just touching at top left, warm shade, neat strike of grid cancel, Fine, a scarce and sought after example of the part India paper variety, according to Dr. Amonette this paper is a mixture of pure rag stock and fiber from the inner bark of the bamboo tree, with 1997 letter from Dr. Amonette and 2016 P.F. certificate

3c Dull Red, Ty. I, Chicago Perf 12-1/2 (11 var). Attractive centering with fully formed perfs all around, cancelled by Michigan town datestamp, completely soundVERY FINE AND CHOICE. A RARE SOUND EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT CHICAGO PERF AND ONE OF ONLY FOUR KNOWN EXAMPLES TO ORIGINATE FROM OUTSIDE OF CHICAGO.
The origin of the Chicago perforation was revealed in an article published by Jerome S. Wagshal in the Chronicle 130 (May 1986). To briefly summarize Mr. Wagshal's revelations, the inventor of the machine used to create the Chicago Perf stamps was Dr. Elijah W. Hadley, a Chicago dentist. He probably constructed the machine in 1854. Over a two-year period, beginning in November 1854, Dr. Hadley's device was offered for sale to the Post Office Department thru R. K. Swift, a prominent Chicago banker and businessman. The distinctive 12-1/2 gauge Chicago Perf was applied to sheets of the 1c and 3c 1851 Issue.
Four examples are recorded of the 3c Chicago perf used from outside of Chicago. Two are on cover, from Rosedale Wis. and New York City, respectively, and were offered in Part 3 of our Jerome S. Wagshal sale in 2010 (sale 996, lots 3185-3186). This stamp also comes from the Wagshal collection. The fourth example, from Boston, resides in an important West Coast collection.

Huge margins all around including significant portions of adjoining stamps at sides, radiant color on bright paper, unobtrusive circular datestamps and portion of red postmark at leftEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A HUGE AND STUNNING USED EXAMPLE OF THE 5-CENT 1856 ISSUE. A TRULY EXCEPTIONAL EXAMPLE FOR THE PERFECTIONIST.
With 1999 P.F. and 2016 P.S.E. certificates (XF-Superb 95 Jumbo; SMQ $2,850.00). We cannot explain why this was not graded Superb 98J.
