1c Blue, Ty. III (21). Deep rich Plate 4 color, extra wide margins and choice centering, virtually face-free cancelEXTREMELY FINE USED EXAMPLE OF THE 1857 ONE-CENT TYPE III.
Due to the narrow vertical spacing on this plate, stamps are most typically found with narrow margins and perforations impinging on one or more sides. The wide-margined example offered here is centered so that the type characteristics are clearly visible.
Ex Twigg-Smith. With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85 Jumbo; SMQ $3,500.00 as 85, $4,750.00 as 90).
1c Blue, Ty. V (24). Two, both with wide margins and choice centering, first cancelled by Milwaukee Wis. double-circle datestamp, Extremely Fine, with 2014 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90), second with open grid cancel, Extremely Fine, with 2014 P.S.E. certificate (VF-XF 85), also with 2014 P.S.A.G. certificate mentioning a tiny natural inclusion (90 used), total SMQ using P.S.E. grades of 90 and 85 $420.00
3c Rose, Ty. I (25). Original gum, lightly hinged, intense shade and proof-like impression, clearly showing the type characteristics, fresh and Very Fine, a pretty stamp, with 1982, 2005 and 2012 P.F. certificates

3c Dull Red, Ty. IV (26A). 5c Brick Red (27). Radiant color, face-free strike of circular datestamp, wide and balanced margins, most recent certificate notes two tiny toned spots at top which are insignificant, still Very Fine, with 1977 P.F. and 2013 P.S.E. certificates (VF-XF 85; SMQ $3,000.00), this would surely have graded much higher were it not for the tiny toned spots
5c Indian Red Certified by P.F. as Bright Red Brown (28A/28b). Remarkably deep and intense shade which is, in our opinion, true Indian Red (certified as such on P.S.E. certificate), lightly cancelled, faint horizontal crease noted on P.S.E. certificate only, recent P.F. certificate erroneously identifies this as Bright Red Brown (28b) -- they got this one wrong -- and states lightly cleaned (we do not see it), Very Fine, with 2003 P.S.E. and 2015 P.F. certificates, Scott Retail as Scott 28b
5c Indian Red (28A). Deep rich color with bold New Orleans circular datestamp, some light toning, otherwise Fine
5c Brown (29). Disturbed original gum and adherence, well-centered with nice margins for this tightly-spaced issue, couple slightly toned perfs at top and reperfed at right, which is noted only on most recent P.F. certificate, Very Fine appearance, with 1976 and 1989 P.F. certificates as sound, with 2014 P.F. certificate as "previously hinged with some toned perfs and reperfed at right"
5c Orange Brown, Ty. II (30). Horizontal strip of three, warm shade, neat strikes of red grid cancel, centered to bottomFINE. A STRIP OF THREE IS THE LARGEST RECORDED USED MULTIPLE OF THE 1860 5-CENT ORANGE BROWN TYPE II.
Four strips of three are known on cover (two vertical and two horizontal) and we have offered two others off cover since keeping computerized records.
With 1988 P.F. certificate
5c Brown, Ty. II (30A). Block of four, original gum, lightly hinged, deep rich color and proof-like impression, top left stamp trivial short perfVERY FINE-EXTREMELY FINE. A RARE AND DESIRABLE ORIGINAL-GUM BLOCK OF FOUR OF THE 1860 5-CENT TYPE II BROWN.
The 5c Brown Type II is far rarer in unused multiples than the Orange Brown. Unlike the 1861 Orange Brown, the earlier printing in Brown was not left in Southern post offices when the issue was demonetized in August 1861. Prior to the discovery of the block of 20 in the Frelinghuysen collection, the largest recorded multiple was a block of nine. A horizontal block of six is also known (creased thru bottom three stamps) as are approximately a half-dozen blocks of four. This is certainly one of the finest of the existing blocks of any size.
Ex Klein

Since 1993 we have offered only two used blocks of the 5c Brown Type II -- this and another with blue grid cancels.
