1c Blue, Ty. Ib (5A). Position 6R1E, three ample to large margins, slightly in at bottom, distinctive plate one early color, neat circular datestampFINE. AN ATTRACTIVE AND DESIRABLE EXAMPLE OF THIS RARE TYPE. OF THE EIGHT TYPE 1b POSITIONS ON THE PLATE, THIS AND POSITION 8R1E ARE THE TWO BEST EXAMPLES.

1c Blue, Ty. Ia (6). Huge top margin showing portion of adjoining stamp, full to just clear at sides, just in at bottom left but clearly demonstrating the Ty. Ia design characteristics, deep rich Plate 4 shade, town cancel, light diagonal crease at topFINE APPEARING EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE 1851 ONE-CENT TYPE Ia.
The extremely rare Type Ia, showing the full design at bottom, was furnished only by 18 of the 200 subjects on Plate 4 (the remaining two bottom-row positions were sub-type Ic).

1c Blue, Ty. II (7). Plate 1E, full margins to barely touched, clear strike of magenta Boston Small "Paid" Grid, tiny tear and small deep thin breaks the paper, still Fine appearance and an extremely rare example of this cancel in magenta (struck in this color very briefly in July 1851), only a few are known

Two of No. 7, first large margins, dark shade, neat circular datestamp, Extremely Fine, with 2007 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90), second red carrier cancel and spot of ms. cancel, large margins and Extremely Fine, with 2010 P.F. certificate (XF 90), finally No. 9 huge margins incl. large part of adjoining stamp, Boston "Paid" cancel, Very Fine and choice, with 2010 P.F. certificate (VF-XF 85)
1c Blue, Ty. III (8). Plate 4, large to huge margins, intense color, clear breaks at both top and bottom, face-free strike of circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE. A BEAUTIFUL USED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE III.
Type III is defined by breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. Since the wear occurred over a period of time, the majority of stamps of this type (both unused and used) has small breaks in at least one line. This stamp is notable for its wide breaks at both top and bottom.
With 2010 P.S.E. certificate (XF 90 Jumbo; SMQ $6,600.00 as 90, $10,500.00 as 95). After comparing this to other graded copies we have sold we are surprised it did not grade higher.
1c Blue, Ty. III (8). Plate 4, large to full margins, pretty color, clear breaks at both top and bottom, neat strikes of circular datestampEXTREMELY FINE. AN ATTRACTIVE USED EXAMPLE OF THE IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE III.
Type III is defined by breaks in the outer lines at both top and bottom. Many Type III stamps have breaks that were created or enlarged by plate wear. 1c Blue, Ty. IIIa (8A). Plate 1E, full to large margins all around, intense color, neat circular datestamp and tiny bit of red transit, Extremely Fine
1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Position 61R1L with surface crack at top right, recut once at top, original gum, small h.r., large to huge margins incl. straddle-pane margin at left with full guideline and part of adjoining stamp at bottom, brilliant color on bright paperEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB ORIGINAL-GUM EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 IMPERFORATE ONE-CENT TYPE IV. A STAMP OF REMARKABLE FRESHNESS AND EYE APPEAL.
Ex Dr. Morris and Odeneal. P.S.E. encapsulated (OGh, XF-Superb 95; SMQ $3,200.00). Only five have graded higher to date and only three others share this grade. The SMQ for XF 95 cannot possibly factor in the left guideline margin on this stamp.
1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Recut once at top and bottom, enormous Jumbo margins all around including sheet margin at left and parts of five adjoining stamps, neat strike of town datestamp, rich colorEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB EXAMPLE OF THE ONE-CENT 1851 TYPE IV, WHICH HAS BEEN AWARDED THE PERFECT GRADE OF GEM 100 JUMBO BY P.S.E.
Ex Vogel. With 2002 P.F. certificate. P.S.E. encapsulated (Gem 100 Jumbo; unpriced in SMQ above the grade of 98, SMQ $1,200.00 as 98). Only seven other examples have been awarded this highest of grades.
1c Blue, Ty. IV (9). Recut once at top and bottom, huge even margins showing portions of adjoining stamps at top and bottom with sheet margin at right, deep rich color, neat New York circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb stamp, P.S.E. encapsulated (Superb 98; SMQ $1,200.00)
3c Orange Brown, Ty. II (10A). Mint N.H., Position 89RO, large and balanced margins all around, deep rich color and proof-like impression which shows every minute detail of the intricate lathework engraving, post-office fresh paper and gumEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 3-CENT 1851 ORANGE BROWN. A REMARKABLE CLASSIC STAMP IN ABSOLUTELY PERFECT CONDITION, WHICH HAS EARNED IT THE P.S.E. GRADE OF XF-SUPERB 95.
The three or four examples of the 3c Orange Brown in Extremely Fine Gem Mint Never-Hinged condition come from blocks that were divided into singles in recent years. This single comes from the block of twelve formerly in the Piller and Zoellner collections.
Ex Piller, Zoellner (as part of a block), Silver Lake and Whitman. 1979 and 2004 P.F. certificates (one as Deep Orange Brown) no longer accompany. P.S.E. encapsulated (XF-Superb 95; unpriced in SMQ in Mint N.H. condition). This is the only graded Mint N.H. example of either Scott 10 or 10A. Scott Retail as hinged
3c Orange Brown, Ty. II (10A). Three large to huge margins, ample at top, wonderful rich color, grid cancel, stitch watermark along top edge, Very Fine and choice with 2005 P.F. certificate
3c Dull Red, Ty. I (11). Mint N.H., enormous margins all around incl. part of five adjoining stamps, brilliant color and detailed impressionEXTREMELY FINE GEM. A SUPERB MINT NEVER-HINGED EXAMPLE OF THE 1851 3-CENT DULL RED, WHICH HAS BEEN GRADED SUPERB 98 BY P.S.E.
Although the 3c 1851 is by no means a rare stamp, there are very few examples in Mint Never-Hinged condition. The last four-margined example we offered was in 2004.
With 2011 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; unpriced in SMQ as Mint N.H., SMQ $2,550.00 as hinged). One other shares this grade, which is the highest awarded to date.
3c Dull Red, Ty. II (11A). Huge margins all around incl. significant portions of adjoining stamps at top and bottom, radiant color, face-free strikes of circular datestamp, Extremely Fine Gem, a superb stamp in every respect, with 2011 P.S.E. certificate (Superb 98; SMQ $500.00)
3c Dull Red, Ty. I, II (11, 11A). Piller/Rosen major color varieties by year, 13 stamps on two cards (two ms. cancels), shades from 1852-56, Fine-Very Fine "chart", very useful for the specialist
