VERY FINE. THIS IS ONE OF THE RAREST OF ALL OF THE HAWAII PROVISIONAL OVERPRINT VARIETIES. THE EXAMPLE OFFERED HERE, WITH PART IMPRINT SELVAGE AND THE ADJOINING STRIP AT BOTTOM, IS A MAGNIFICENT SHOWPIECE.
This error was caused by the overprint form and paper being significantly misaligned (form shifted downward) while printing. The overprint at the top of each normal stamp was intended to appear on the stamp above it. This is confirmed by the accompanying bottom part imprint strip of five, which shows an extra overprint completely in the selvage below. This digital reconstruction shows the two strips reunited, though they can be mounted side-by-side on an exhibit page.
