ONE OF ONLY FIVE RECORDED EXAMPLES OF THE 1859 2-CENT DARK BLUE HAWAIIAN NUMERAL ISSUE WITH THE COMMA AFTER "CENTS" VARIETY. ONE OF THE GREAT NUMERAL ISSUE RARITIES.
The five 2c Blue Numeral stamps with the Comma after "Cents" variety known to us are:
1) Dark Blue, Plate 1-A, Type X (Westerberg Position 2), tear at right, two holes repaired, ex Honolulu Advertiser, realized $2,100 hammer in 1995;
2) Dark Blue, Plate 1-A, Type X (Westerberg Position 2), on cover from Hilo to Honolulu, ex Honolulu Advertiser and Gross;
3) Dark Blue, Plate 1-A, Type X (Westerberg Postion 2), off cover, pen cancel, ex Crocker, Pietsch and Steiner, the example offered here;
4) Light Blue, Plate 3-A, Type I (Westerberg Position 3), red Honolulu circular datestamp, ex Ishikawa and Golden (Siegel Sale 1009, lot 357, realized $9,000 hammer); and
5) Plate 1-A, Type X (Westerberg Position 2), unused, offered in our 2017 Rarities of the World sale.

This stamp has the classic "Robin's Egg" Blue paper shade of the 1862 printing from Plate 3-Gx.

Plate 4-A, Type IV (Westerberg Position 4), "1" without broken serif unlike most other examples from this position, unused (no gum), ample to large margins, faint pencil line at lower right, Very Fine and choice, Westerberg notes that the serif must have broken off at an early stage of printing, he recorded only one other single and one contained in a block of eight, there are probably no more than ten unbroken in existence, Scott Retail with no premium for the position

AN ATTRACTIVE USED EXAMPLE OF THE SCARCE 1863 2-CENT NUMERAL WITH "2" AT TOP OF RECTANGLE.

HAWAII, 1863, 2c Dark Blue, Bluish (17). Plate 5-B, Type IX (Westerberg Position 9), ample margins all around, square grid cancel, small repaired tear at top centerVERY FINE APPEARANCE. AN ENORMOUSLY RARE USED 1863 2-CENT NUMERAL FROM THE FIFTH SETTING IN DARK BLUE ON BLUISH WOVE PAPER.
The 2c Dark Blue on Bluish paper (Scott 17) was printed after Scott 18 and before Scott 20. It is one of the rarest of all Numeral Issues in either unused or used condition, and almost all known examples have small faults.

The type at left, "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE.", is known in seven stages or states on this plate. This stage shows no trace of the "E" and it is rare with original gum.

The type at left, "HAWAIIAN POSTAGE.", is known in seven stages or states on this plate. This is the Fourth State, showing only the "HA" and "E", with the "E" dropped down in comparison to earlier states.
