HAWAII, 1882-83, 2c Dull Red, 5c Ultramarine (39, 43a). 2c horizontal strip of five with natural s.e. at right, all stamps tied by four strikes of purple "Late Letter Mail" double-circle, additional bold strike at lower left on cover to Esquimalt, British Columbia,, purple "Forwarded by/J. M. Oat, Jr. & Co./Stationers & News Dealers/Honolulu, H.I." four-line backstamp, "Honolulu H.I. Oct. 1" (1884) circular datestamp also ties stamps, San Francisco and Esquimalt receiving backstampEXTREMELY FINE. A COLORFUL AND RARE SUPPLEMENTARY MAIL USE FROM HAWAII TO BRITISH COLUMBIA. A STUNNING COVER.
The "Late Letter Mail" handstamp was used to indicate payment of the extra fee for a letter that was brought to the Honolulu Post Office after the posted closing time for a mail shipment -- similar to U.S. Supplementary Mail. Gregory lists date range of use from Jul. 2, 1882, to Oct. 1, 1884 (this the latest recorded example). This cover, with a strip of five of No. 43a and a single No. 39 is the most visually stunning example we have encountered.

Jul. 30 8AM 1891" duplex datestamp on cover to Lieut. Clarke on the U.S.S. Iroquois c/o U.S. Consul at Apia, Samoa, magenta "PAID ALL" in oval, slightly reduced at left, Very Fine appearance, an outstanding three-color franking and a rare cover to Samoa correctly prepaid at double the 12c non-UPU rate to Australian States and Samoa, approximately a dozen covers are reported showing the 12c non-UPU treaty rate, ex Bilden

Aug. 15" (1884) circular datestamp on cover to Liverpool, England, clear strike of purple "Late Letter Mail" double-circle handstamp (Ty. 759, Rarity 1RRRR), red Liverpool "U.S. Packet" circular datestamp, reverse with San Francisco receiver and magenta "San Francisco, Cal. Stm. Horizontal pair, purple three-ring target cancels with matching "Spreckelsville Maui Mar. ? 1885" circular datestamp on cover to Heidelberg, Germany, Honolulu circular datestamp of Mar. 14, unusual fancy "T" handstamp with purple manuscript "50 ctms" to indicate short payment and postage due, matching "2/" (double rate) marking, blue crayon due marking, New York and "Verviers A. Coeln" backstamps, stamps with some slight toning, central file fold, small cover tear at top, appears Very Fine, the Hawaiian "T" or "Tax" due handstamp must be scarce as Power Search does not contain another outside of this sale and it is unlisted on the Gregory Post Office in Paradise website

Top sheet margin block of 25 with part imprint selvage at sides, most stamps Mint N.H., some old mounting paper in top selvage knocks a few out of the Mint N.H. category, some stray gum in selvage, few toned specks, tiny piece out of top right corner selvage, despite these minor issues a Fine-Very Fine and scarce large multiple, Scott Retail counting only 15 stamps as Mint N.H. more than $4,200.00

Cleghorne" signature (collector of customs), two with "J.M.K." handstamp, few small flaws to be expected including the typical oxidation seen on this issue, overall appear Fine, interesting group
